La prevalencia del consumo de tabaco en Kenia sigue siendo una importante preocupación de salud pública. Según datos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en 2022 se estimaba que había 2,573,131 fumadores de 15 años o más. Ese mismo año, la prevalencia general de tabaquismo en adultos fue de 7.6%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 14.7% de los hombres y el 0.7% de las mujeres eran fumadores. Esto representa una leve disminución respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia general era de 8.1%, con un 15.6% en hombres y un 0.8% en mujeres. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco fue responsable de 9,418 fallecimientos, lo que equivale al 2.63% de todas las muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo. Se observan claras diferencias de género en la mortalidad asociada: 7,810 muertes entre hombres (3.81% de todas las muertes masculinas) y 1,608 entre mujeres (1.05% de todas las muertes femeninas). Como referencia, en 2015 la prevalencia de fumadores adultos diarios era de 8.3%, con un 16.6% en hombres y un 0.4% en mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el persistente desafío que representa el tabaquismo en Kenia y la necesidad de mantener las intervenciones de salud pública y las medidas regulatorias para reducir tanto la prevalencia de fumadores como las consecuencias sanitarias asociadas.
