En Congo, el consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un importante problema de salud pública. En 2022, se estimó que la prevalencia del tabaquismo entre personas de 15 años o más era del 14,4 %, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 28,2 % en hombres y solo 0,8 % en mujeres. Esto representa un aumento respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia en hombres era del 26,9 %. El número de fumadores en 2022 fue de aproximadamente 476,627 personas, en comparación con 430,167 en 2020. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos en 2017 fue del 17,4 %, con un 33,8 % en hombres y un 1,1 % en mujeres. La mortalidad asociada al tabaquismo también muestra una tendencia preocupante en el país. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco contribuyó al 3,51 % de todas las muertes, lo que equivale a 1,625 fallecimientos, incluyendo 1,362 hombres y 263 mujeres. Estos datos ponen de relieve los persistentes desafíos sanitarios que representa el tabaquismo en Congo y subrayan la necesidad de intervenciones de salud pública eficaces para abordar este problema.
