Parts of the Model

  1. Case Shell The two-part shell of this unbranded concept kit houses the case electronics and gives the holder a dock. Magnets hold the holder in a side channel, where spring contacts supply charging power.
  2. Charger Module In this concept, a lithium-ion pouch cell with charging electronics. It charges through USB-C and recharges the holder when it is docked.
  3. Sleeve The metal sleeve encloses the holder's internal parts. In this concept, a touch control starts heating and a light ring shows the device's status.
  4. Collar Guides the stick into the holder and comes off for cleaning. Its twist-off fitting is a feature of this concept.
  5. Heating Chamber The stick slides into a stainless steel chamber that is heated from outside, without a blade inserted into the tobacco. Other devices heat the tobacco with a blade or pin inside the stick, or by induction.
  6. Film Heater A flexible resistive heater wrapped around the chamber. Changes in its electrical resistance give an estimate of the heater's average temperature, which is used to regulate the power.
  7. Control Board Manages the heater's power and temperature, and the holder's controls and lights. Heating profiles and safety cut-offs depend on the device.
  8. Battery A rechargeable lithium-ion cell that powers the holder's heater and electronics. In this concept, it charges through contacts when the holder is docked in the case.
  9. Wrapper Paper that holds the sections of the stick together. Commercial sticks use their own papers and adhesives, sometimes with extra layers.
  10. Tobacco Plug A rod of crimped, gathered reconstituted tobacco sheet containing glycerol (glycerin). Heating it produces an aerosol of nicotine, water, glycerol and other compounds, including flavour compounds and harmful carbonyls.
  11. Cooling Section A hollow cellulose acetate tube that supports the tobacco plug, followed by crimped polylactic acid (PLA) film that cools the aerosol. Other heated tobacco sticks use different cooling parts.
  12. Mouthpiece Filter A short cellulose acetate mouthpiece that gives the lip end of the stick its shape and firmness.

Heated tobacco products (HTP) are electronic devices that consist of a battery and a heating element, and they use proprietary (own brand) sticks of solid tobacco. These tobacco sticks are inserted into the device before being electronically heated to release nicotine vapour that can be inhaled in a similar way to vaping. Unlike combustible tobacco products, such as cigarettes and cigars, HTP do not burn tobacco – instead they heat it below its combustion point to release nicotine without igniting it.

Safer nicotine products (SNP) are non-combustible: none of them burn tobacco and some of them do not contain any tobacco at all.
