Parts of the Model
- Drip Tip The mouthpiece through which the aerosol is inhaled. In this design it pushes into the top cap and is held by O-rings.
- Top Cap Closes the top of this tank and holds the drip tip. It unscrews for refilling, while seals around the glass help keep the liquid in.
- Glass Tube The transparent tube forms the tank wall and shows the liquid level. Borosilicate glass resists heat and many chemicals, but can still break.
- E-liquid Usually based on propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerine, e-liquid may contain flavourings and nicotine, either freebase or as nicotine salts. Heating the liquid in the wick produces vapour that cools and partly condenses into aerosol droplets carried in the air.
- Coil Head A replaceable assembly containing the heater and wick. In this tank, liquid enters through side ports, and air passes the heater before carrying the aerosol up the central airway.
- Coil and Wick A resistance-wire coil heats liquid that a cotton wick draws in by capillary action. If the liquid supply cannot keep up, the wick can overheat and scorch, giving a dry or burnt puff; a burnt coil head should be replaced.
- Tank Base Supports the coil head and joins this tank to the mod through a 510 connection. Its adjustable airflow ring controls the air entering beneath the coil.
- Mod Shell The housing of this regulated box mod encloses the battery and electronics and carries the fire button, adjustment controls, display and USB charging port. Pods, disposables and pen-style devices can be built quite differently.
- End Cap This magnetic end cover gives access to the removable battery. Other devices use different covers, or batteries that are not user-replaceable.
- Battery Cell A removable 18650 lithium-ion cell powers this box mod through its control electronics. Follow the device manufacturer's battery and charging instructions, never use a damaged cell or one with a torn wrap, and carry spare cells in a protective case.
- Chipset Measures the coil's resistance, regulates the power delivered to it and runs the controls and display. Protection against short circuits, low voltage or overheating depends on the device; temperature control also needs a compatible chipset and coil.
- 510 Connector A threaded socket that holds the tank and completes its electrical connection to the mod. Here, an insulated spring-loaded centre contact is positive and the outer metal thread is the negative return.
Battery-powered electronic devices that heat a nicotine-containing liquid to produce an aerosol for inhalation. The liquid typically contains nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, and may include flavourings and other ingredients.
This category includes disposable devices, closed-system devices (such as pods), and refillable vaping devices.
The defining characteristic is the delivery of nicotine through inhalation of an aerosol generated from a liquid without tobacco combustion.
Number of Users of Different Nicotine Delivery Systems Worldwide
Learn MoreThe country profiles of Japan, New Zealand, Norway and the UK all provide evidence of the significant progress that can be made when people who smoke are given the opportunity to substitute cigarettes with safer products.
Learn MoreIn public health, harm reduction aims to reduce health risks by providing safer alternatives and encouraging less risky behaviours, rather than by prohibiting the products or behaviours themselves.
Learn MoreWhile legally binding, the FCTC has no enforcement consequences for noncompliance and tobacco control remains a domestic policy issue.
Why Is Tobacco Harm Reduction Needed and What Is the Evidence It Works?
Our latest Briefing Paper explains the importance of tobacco harm reduction as well as providing a range of country case studies demonstrating the power of safer nicotine products to bring down rates of smoking.
82 Million Vapers Worldwide in 2021: The GSTHR Estimate
The popularity of nicotine vaping products continues to grow around the world as smokers choose to make the switch to safer alternatives and our latest research estimates the global number of vapers increased by 20% between 2020 and 2021.
