In Tonga, smoking is legal with some restrictions on cigarettes. The sale and import of cigarettes are legal, including purchases through vending machines and online platforms. The country imposes several regulatory measures, such as a minimum legal sales age of 18 years and restrictions on smoking in public places. Tonga applies a total tax rate of 67.42% with a specific excise tax of 65.22% on cigarette products. Prevalence data show that, as of 2024, 30.2% of adults in Tonga were current tobacco smokers, with a prevalence of 16.1% among females and 47.4% among males. The number of current smokers was estimated to be 20,000 individuals. In 2021, an estimated 108 deaths were attributed to tobacco smoking in Tonga, including 23 female and 85 male deaths. These accounted for 16.13% of all deaths in the country—7.37% among women and 23.55% among men.
