Guyana regulates tobacco products, including cigarettes, with some restrictions. Under these regulations, it is legally allowed to sell, smoke, and import cigarettes for trade (with a license), but sales through online platforms and vending machines are banned. Regulations also include mandatory health warnings on packaging and a minimum age requirement of 18 years for purchase. Legal restrictions on smoke in public places are enforced, and there is a total ban on all types of advertising. A total taxation rate of 24.89%, which includes a specific excise tax value of 10.87% should be paid for cigarette products.

Data from 2024 indicate that the current prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 and older was 10.9% in Guyana. This was notably higher among males with 20.4%, compared to 2.1% among females. The total number of smokers in Guyana was estimated to be 63,000 individuals. This marks a slight decrease from 65,913 current smokers reported in 2020.

In terms of smoking-related mortalities, data from 2021 show that smoking accounted for 3.63% of all deaths in Guyana, with 4.73% among males and 2.1% among females. The absolute number of deaths attributable to smoking in 2021 was 311, comprising 236 male deaths and 75 female deaths. These statistics highlight both the gender disparities in smoking and the significant health risks associated with smoking in the country.
