In the Dominican Republic, smoking is legal with certain restrictions. Cigarette sales are allowed, and purchasing them from vending machines is also permitted. It is also legal to buy cigarettes online and to import them for trade with an import license. However, health warnings on cigarette packaging are mandatory, and the minimum legal age to purchase them is 18 years. There are also legal restrictions on smoking in some public places, such as educational and healthcare facilities. Cigarettes are taxed at a total rate of 44.70% and a specific excise rate of 18.38%.

In terms of statistics, there were 984,000 current smokers in the Dominican Republic as of 2024. As of 2022, the adult current smoking prevalence was 9.1%—12.5% among males and 5.7% among females. In 2021, an estimated 6,400 deaths were attributed to tobacco smoking, including 4,100 male and 2,200 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for approximately 8.72% of all deaths in the country—9.61% among males and 7.45% among females in 2021.
