В Шри-Ланке распространённость курения табака среди взрослых в возрасте 15 лет и старше демонстрирует заметную динамику за последние годы. По данным на 2024 год, текущий уровень распространённости курения табака среди взрослого населения составил 12,9%. Этот показатель немного выше, чем 12,3%, зафиксированные в 2020 году, но ниже по сравнению с 13,8% в 2019 году. Распространённость среди мужчин в 2024 году составила 26,6%, а среди женщин – 0,5%. Это означает небольшой рост числа курящих среди мужчин по сравнению с 25,9% в 2020 году, но уменьшение по сравнению с 27,4% в 2019 году, в то время как среди женщин этот показатель увеличился с 0,2% в 2020 году. Рост показателей курения сопровождается увеличением числа людей, употребляющих табак: с 2,2 миллиона в 2020 году до 2,3 миллиона в 2022 году. В 2020 году уровень ежедневного курения среди взрослых составлял 6,4%, а среди мужчин – 13,9%. Несмотря на определённое снижение этих показателей, смертность, связанная с курением, остаётся причиной для беспокойства: в 2021 году было зафиксировано 11 935 смертей. Годовой процент всех смертей, связанных с употреблением табака, в 2021 году составил 7,53%, при этом среди мужчин этот показатель был выше (10,95%), чем среди женщин (3,38%). Эти данные подчёркивают сохраняющуюся проблему для общественного здравоохранения, связанную с курением табака в Шри-Ланке, и требуют скоординированных усилий по снижению распространённости курения и связанных с этим последствий для здоровья.
