En Sri Lanka, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más ha mostrado una tendencia descendente en los últimos años. En 2022, la prevalencia bruta del consumo de tabaco en la población adulta se situó en 8,5%, lo que representa una disminución respecto al 12,3% registrado en 2020 y al 13,8% en 2019. Los datos desglosados por género en 2022 señalan que el 17,7% de los hombres y el 0,2% de las mujeres eran fumadores, lo que evidencia una reducción considerable en la prevalencia entre hombres, que fue de 25,9% en 2020 y de 27,4% en 2019. Sin embargo, la prevalencia entre mujeres se mantuvo estable en 0,2% desde 2020, tras bajar de 0,3% en 2019. La tendencia a la baja se refleja también en la reducción del número de fumadores, que pasó de 1.968.059 en 2020 a 1.380.571 en 2022. En 2020, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue de 6,4%, con una prevalencia del 13,9% entre los hombres. A pesar de estas reducciones, la mortalidad asociada al tabaquismo sigue siendo preocupante, con 11.935 muertes registradas en 2021. El porcentaje anual de todas las muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo en 2021 fue de 7,53%, con un impacto mayor en hombres (10,95%) que en mujeres (3,38%). Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío continuo que representa el consumo de tabaco para la salud pública en Sri Lanka y la necesidad de reforzar los esfuerzos destinados a reducir su prevalencia y los efectos negativos asociados.
