W Sri Lance w ostatnich latach obserwuje się wyraźny trend spadkowy w zakresie palenia tytoniu wśród osób dorosłych w wieku 15 lat i starszych. W 2022 roku skorygowana częstość palenia tytoniu w tej grupie wyniosła 8,5%. Oznacza to spadek w porównaniu do 12,3% odnotowanych w 2020 roku oraz 13,8% w 2019 roku. Dane dotyczące podziału według płci w 2022 roku wskazują, że 17,7% mężczyzn i 0,2% kobiet paliło tytoń. Jest to znaczący spadek wśród mężczyzn w stosunku do 25,9% z 2020 roku i 27,4% z 2019 roku. W przypadku kobiet poziom palenia utrzymuje się na stałym poziomie 0,2% od 2020 roku, w porównaniu do 0,3% w 2019 roku. Spadek ten przekłada się również na zmniejszenie liczby palaczy – z 1 968 059 w 2020 roku do 1 380 571 w roku 2022. W 2020 roku codzienna częstość palenia wśród dorosłych wynosiła 6,4%, a wśród mężczyzn 13,9%. Pomimo obserwowanego zmniejszenia częstości palenia, liczba zgonów związanych z paleniem tytoniu nadal budzi niepokój – w 2021 roku odnotowano 11 935 takich przypadków. W 2021 roku udział zgonów przypisywanych paleniu stanowił 7,53% wszystkich zgonów, przy czym odsetek ten był wyższy wśród mężczyzn (10,95%) niż kobiet (3,38%). Przedstawione dane podkreślają, że palenie tytoniu wciąż stanowi poważne wyzwanie dla zdrowia publicznego na Sri Lance i wymaga konsekwentnych działań mających na celu dalsze ograniczanie jego powszechności oraz związanych z nim skutków zdrowotnych.
