W Tanzanii według Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO) rozpowszechnienie palenia tytoniu wśród osób dorosłych w wieku 15 lat i więcej w 2022 roku wynosiło 5,9%. Stanowi to spadek w porównaniu z poprzednimi latami – 6,7% w 2020 roku oraz 11% w 2019 roku. W 2022 roku odsetek palących wśród mężczyzn wynosił 10,9%, a wśród kobiet 1,1%. Oznacza to niewielki spadek w porównaniu z 2020 rokiem, kiedy palenie deklarowało 12,4% mężczyzn i 1,2% kobiet, oraz 2019 rokiem, gdy wartości te wynosiły odpowiednio 19,9% i 2%. W 2018 roku codziennie paliło 5,2% dorosłych – w tym 9,9% mężczyzn i 0,9% kobiet. Liczba palaczy w 2022 roku wynosiła około 2 041 494 osoby, co oznacza spadek w porównaniu z 2 166 098 w roku 2020 i 3 435 679 w 2019 roku. Śmiertelność związana z paleniem tytoniu nadal stanowi poważny problem – w 2021 roku zanotowano 13 534 zgony z tego powodu, w tym 10 326 mężczyzn i 3 209 kobiet. Zgony spowodowane paleniem stanowiły 3,07% wszystkich zgonów w kraju, w tym 4,29% zgonów wśród mężczyzn i 1,61% wśród kobiet. Dane te podkreślają trwający negatywny wpływ zdrowotny palenia tytoniu w Tanzanii, pomimo obserwowanego w ostatnich latach spadkowego trendu.
