Tradycyjny bezdymny tytoń jest zakazany w Tanzanii. Podlega regulacjom jako wyrób tytoniowy, jednak jego sprzedaż jest nielegalna, a wszelkie formy reklamy tytoniu są całkowicie zabronione. Pomimo zakazu, w 2018 roku szacowano, że w Tanzanii było około 2,0 miliona aktualnych użytkowników tradycyjnego bezdymnego tytoniu, co stanowiło 6,5% dorosłej populacji. Używanie tego produktu było znacznie częstsze wśród mężczyzn – 12,8% deklarowało aktualne użycie, podczas gdy wśród kobiet odsetek ten wynosił zaledwie 0,7%. Codzienne używanie tego rodzaju tytoniu zadeklarowało 4,8% dorosłych, w tym 9,4% mężczyzn i 0,5% kobiet.
