Традиционные бездымные табачные изделия запрещены в Танзании. Они регулируются как табачная продукция, однако их продажа находится вне закона, а также действует всесторонний запрет на любые формы рекламы табака. Несмотря на это, по данным на 2018 год, в Танзании насчитывалось примерно 2,0 миллиона человек, которые в настоящее время употребляют традиционные бездымные табачные изделия, что составляет 6,5% взрослого населения. Уровень употребления среди мужчин был значительно выше: 12,8% мужчин сообщили о текущем употреблении по сравнению с лишь 0,7% женщин.
