En Tanzania, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más en 2022 se estimó en un 5.9%, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). Este dato representa una disminución respecto a años anteriores, con un 6.7% en 2020 y un 11% en 2019. Las tasas de prevalencia por género para 2022 indican que el 10.9% de los hombres y el 1.1% de las mujeres eran fumadores, cifras ligeramente inferiores al 12.4% de los hombres y al 1.2% de las mujeres en 2020, y al 19.9% de los hombres y al 2% de las mujeres en 2019. La prevalencia de personas adultas que fumaban a diario en 2018 fue del 5.2%, siendo del 9.9% entre los hombres y del 0.9% entre las mujeres. En términos absolutos, se estimó que había aproximadamente 2,041,494 fumadores en 2022, lo que refleja un descenso respecto a los 2,166,098 de 2020 y los 3,435,679 de 2019. La mortalidad atribuible al consumo de tabaco sigue siendo motivo de preocupación, con 13,534 muertes registradas en 2021, de las cuales 10,326 correspondieron a hombres y 3,209 a mujeres. Las muertes asociadas al tabaquismo representaron el 3.07% del total de fallecimientos en el país, incluyendo el 4.29% de las muertes masculinas y el 1.61% de las muertes femeninas. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el impacto persistente del consumo de tabaco en la salud de la población en Tanzania, a pesar de la tendencia a la baja observada en los últimos años.
