En Sudáfrica, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más se registró en 20,3% en 2022. En comparación, esta prevalencia fue de 20,2% en 2020 y de 20,7% en 2019. Los datos desglosados por sexo correspondientes a 2022 muestran que el 35,1% de los hombres y el 6,5% de las mujeres fumaban tabaco, lo que evidencia una marcada diferencia entre géneros en los hábitos de consumo. La prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco entre adultos en 2021 fue del 21,2%, con un 35,1% en hombres y un 8,3% en mujeres. En cuanto a la mortalidad, el tabaquismo fue responsable del 4,42% de todas las muertes en 2021, afectando en mayor medida a los hombres (5,75%) que a las mujeres (2,86%). El número anual de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue de 32.442, incluyendo 22.817 hombres y 9.625 mujeres. Además, la cantidad de personas fumadoras en 2022 se estimó en 8.617.084, lo que representa un aumento respecto a los 8.323.703 registrados en 2020. Estas cifras reflejan el desafío continuo que supone el tabaquismo para la salud pública en Sudáfrica y subrayan la importancia de implementar intervenciones específicas para reducir su prevalencia y la mortalidad asociada.
