En Sudáfrica, en 2021 había aproximadamente 920 000 usuarios de cigarrillos electrónicos, con una prevalencia de vapeo entre adultos del 2,2%: 0,7% en mujeres y 3,8% en hombres. Estas cifras indican que los cigarrillos electrónicos están disponibles en el país, aunque no está claro cuán extendido es su uso. Los cigarrillos electrónicos están permitidos y regulados como productos medicinales. Se pueden adquirir en farmacias con receta médica, pero no está autorizada la compra en línea para uso personal. Aunque la venta de nicotina es legal, se exige que los envases incluyan advertencias sanitarias y rigen restricciones de edad mínima de 18 años. Además, el vapeo está prohibido en lugares públicos. With the number of tobacco users across the continent set to rise by 2025, we look at the current state of tobacco harm reduction in the region, assessing the progress made so far and the obstacles preventing greater adoption of safer nicotine products.
