W Republice Południowej Afryki odsetek osób palących tytoń wśród dorosłych w wieku 15 lat i starszych wyniósł w 2022 roku 20,3%. Dla porównania, w 2020 roku było to 20,2%, a w 2019 roku – 20,7%. Dane według płci z 2022 roku wskazują, że 35,1% mężczyzn i 6,5% kobiet paliło tytoń, co wyraźnie ukazuje znaczną różnicę między płciami w nawykach palenia. Wskaźnik codziennego palenia tytoniu wśród dorosłych w 2021 roku wyniósł 21,2%, przy czym dotyczył 35,1% mężczyzn i 8,3% kobiet. Jeśli chodzi o zgony, palenie było przyczyną 4,42% wszystkich zgonów w 2021 roku, z wyższym odsetkiem wśród mężczyzn (5,75%) niż wśród kobiet (2,86%). W 2021 roku liczba zgonów związanych z paleniem wyniosła 32 442, w tym 22 817 mężczyzn i 9 625 kobiet. Ponadto liczba palaczy w 2022 roku wyniosła około 8 617 084, co stanowi wzrost w porównaniu z 8 323 703 osobami palącymi w 2020 roku.
