En Nigeria, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más se estimó en 2.9% en 2022, comparado con el 2.6% reportado en 2020. En 2022, la prevalencia de tabaquismo fue de 5.4% entre los hombres y de 0.4% entre las mujeres. El número de personas fumadoras en 2022 fue de aproximadamente 3,432,243, lo que representa un aumento respecto a las 2,906,910 registradas en 2020. Como referencia, en 2017 la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue de 4.6%, con una prevalencia de 8.6% entre los hombres y de 0.5% entre las mujeres. En 2021, la mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo fue considerable, con un total de 15,926 fallecimientos que representaron el 0.87% de todas las muertes en el país. En particular, el consumo de tabaco causó 11,794 muertes en hombres y 4,132 en mujeres, lo que corresponde al 1.2% y al 0.49% de todas las muertes masculinas y femeninas, respectivamente. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto los desafíos de salud pública que representa el tabaquismo en Nigeria, y resaltan la necesidad de continuar con la vigilancia y las acciones regulatorias destinadas a reducir su impacto.
