En Mauricio, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco ha mostrado tendencias significativas en los últimos años. En 2022, se estimó que el 20% de los adultos de 15 años o más fumaban, con una marcada diferencia según el género: el 38.1% de los hombres y el 2.8% de las mujeres eran fumadores. En comparación, los datos de años anteriores señalan un descenso gradual de las tasas de consumo; en 2020, la prevalencia general fue del 19.9%, con tasas del 37.6% en hombres y 2.9% en mujeres, respectivamente. Esta tendencia a la baja también se refleja en la reducción del número de fumadores, que pasó de 224,908 en 2019 a 210,664 en 2022. En 2017, la prevalencia del consumo diario de tabaco entre adultos era del 16%, con un 31.2% en hombres y un 1.5% en mujeres. En 2021, se registraron 1,301 muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco, lo que representa el 9.86% de todos los fallecimientos en el país. Los datos de mortalidad por género indican que 1,037 hombres y 265 mujeres murieron por causas relacionadas con el tabaquismo ese mismo año. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el impacto continuo del consumo de tabaco en Mauricio y subrayan la importancia de mantener los esfuerzos de salud pública orientados a reducir la prevalencia del tabaquismo y las consecuencias negativas asociadas para la salud.
