In Mauritius, smoking is legally allowed with specific restrictions around tobacco. It is legal to sell cigarettes and import them for trade, but illegal to buy from vending machines or online. Advertising is prohibited, health warnings on packaging are mandatory, minimum age restrictions of 18 years apply for sales, and there are legal restrictions on smoking in public places. The total taxation rate on cigarettes is 78.18%, with 65.14% specific excise tax.

The current prevalence of tobacco smoking shows notable variations over recent years in Mauritius. As of 2024, the adult current smoking prevalence was 17.2% among individuals aged 15 years and older, with a marked gender differences: 32.1% of males and 2.3% of females were identified as current smokers. In comparison, data from previous years indicate a gradual decline in smoking rates; in 2020, the overall prevalence was 19.9%, with male and female rates at 37.6% and 2.9%, respectively. This downward trend is also reflected in the number of smokers, which decreased from 224,908 in 2019 to 184,000 in 2024. For reference, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 16%, with 31.2% among males and 1.5% among females.

Smoking-related mortality was reported to be 1,301 in 2021, which accounted for 9.86% of all deaths in the country. The mortality data by gender show that 1,037 male deaths and 265 female deaths were attributable to smoking in 2021. These statistics represent the ongoing impact of tobacco smoking in Mauritius, highlighting the importance of continued public health efforts to reduce smoking prevalence and its associated health burdens.
