En Eritrea, el impacto del consumo de tabaco en la salud pública es considerable. Los datos de 2020 indican que el 5.1% de la población adulta fumaba, con una prevalencia mayor en hombres (10.2%) y mucho menor en mujeres (0.2%). El número de personas fumadoras en 2020 se estimó en 102,150, lo que representa una disminución respecto a las 111,875 registradas en 2019. En cuanto a la mortalidad, las cifras más recientes de 2021 señalan que el 2.83% de todas las muertes en el país se atribuyeron a causas relacionadas con el consumo de tabaco. Además, el 4.45% de los fallecimientos masculinos y el 0.87% de los femeninos estuvieron vinculados al tabaquismo. El número anual de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue de 1,440, de las cuales 1,238 correspondieron a hombres y 201 a mujeres. En comparación, en 2016 se registraron 962 muertes por tabaquismo, lo que muestra un aumento destacado a lo largo de los años. Estos datos ponen de relieve el reto que sigue representando el consumo de tabaco para la salud pública en Eritrea y subrayan la importancia de mantener los esfuerzos destinados a abordar este problema.
