W Erytrei palenie tytoniu ma istotny wpływ na zdrowie publiczne. Dane z 2020 roku wskazują, że 5,1% dorosłych paliło papierosy, przy czym rozpowszechnienie tego nałogu było wyższe wśród mężczyzn (10,2%), a znacznie niższe wśród kobiet (0,2%). Liczbę osób palących tytoń w 2020 roku oszacowano na 102 150, co oznacza spadek w porównaniu do 111 875 w roku 2019. Według najnowszych danych z 2021 roku, 2,83% wszystkich zgonów w kraju było związanych z przyczynami wynikającymi z palenia tytoniu. Ponadto 4,45% wszystkich zgonów mężczyzn oraz 0,87% wszystkich zgonów kobiet miało związek z paleniem. Roczna liczba zgonów przypisywanych paleniu tytoniu wyniosła w 2021 roku 1 440 (1 238 wśród mężczyzn i 201 wśród kobiet). Dla porównania, w 2016 roku odnotowano 962 zgony związane z paleniem tytoniu, co wskazuje na wyraźny wzrost w kolejnych latach.
