For reference, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 9.6%, with a prevalence of 12.7% among males. This prevalence among females was 2.2% in 2015.
Smoking-related mortality also presents gender disparities; in 2021, there were 3,814 annual deaths attributable to smoking, with males accounting for 2,677 of these deaths and females 1,138. This indicates that the percentage of total deaths attributable to smoking was 2.18%, with 2.67% among males and 1.52% among females. These trends indicate progress in managing tobacco smoking and its health impacts in Zambia in recent years, although the gender differences highlight areas where targeted interventions might be crucial.
