In Zambia, the prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 and older shows a decline over recent years. As of 2022, the overall adult smoking prevalence was reported to be 10.7%. This shows a significant gender disparity: 20.2% of adult males, compared to 1.6% of adult females, were smokers. This reflects a decrease from 2019, when the overall prevalence was 13.5%, with 24.1% of males and 3% of females identified as smokers. In terms of population numbers, there were approximately 1,133,089 smokers in 2022, down from 1,279,797 in 2019. For reference, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 9.6%, with a prevalence of 12.7% among males. This prevalence among females was 2.2% in 2015.
Smoking-related mortality also presents gender disparities; in 2021, there were 3,814 annual deaths attributable to smoking, with males accounting for 2,677 of these deaths and females 1,138. This indicates that the percentage of total deaths attributable to smoking was 2.18%, with 2.67% among males and 1.52% among females. These trends indicate progress in managing tobacco smoking and its health impacts in Zambia in recent years, although the gender differences highlight areas where targeted interventions might be crucial.
