En Zambia, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más ha mostrado una disminución en los últimos años. En 2022, la prevalencia general en adultos fue de 10.7%. Esta cifra evidencia una marcada diferencia por género: el 20.2% de los hombres adultos fumaba, frente al 1.6% de las mujeres adultas. Esto representa una disminución respecto a 2019, cuando la prevalencia general era de 13.5%, con un 24.1% de hombres y un 3% de mujeres fumadoras. En términos de cantidad de personas, había aproximadamente 1,133,089 fumadores en 2022, frente a 1,279,797 en 2019. Como referencia, la prevalencia de consumo diario en adultos fue de 9.6% en 2017, con una prevalencia entre hombres de 12.7%. Entre las mujeres, la prevalencia fue de 2.2% en 2015. La mortalidad atribuida al consumo de tabaco también muestra diferencias de género; en 2021 se registraron 3,814 muertes anuales atribuibles al tabaquismo, de las cuales 2,677 correspondieron a hombres y 1,138 a mujeres. Esto indica que el porcentaje del total de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco fue de 2.18%, con un 2.67% entre los hombres y un 1.52% entre las mujeres. Estas tendencias muestran avances en el control del tabaquismo y sus efectos en la salud en Zambia en los últimos años, aunque las diferencias por género subrayan la necesidad de intervenciones específicas.
