Togo Background
Data sourced: 2023.   Page updated: 2025-06-19

As of 2017, Togo had approximately 155,500 current users of traditional smokeless tobacco, representing 3.6% of the adult population. Its use was higher among men at 5.1% compared to 2.2% among women. Daily use was reported by 2.6% of adults, with 4% of men and 1.4% of women using smokeless tobacco every day. From regulatory standpoint, traditional smokeless tobacco is legal and regulated as a tobacco product in Togo. It is thus legal to sell and use these products, and online purchases are also permitted. However, packaging is required to carry health warnings, and the sale of these products is restricted to individuals aged 18 years and older. Additionally, there is a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising, reflecting strong regulatory control over promotion.
