In Togo, the current prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 years and older, as of 2024, was estimated to be 4.5%. This figure reflects a slight decline from 4.9% recorded in 2020 and 7.2% in 2019. Among males, the current prevalence of smoking decreased from 9.3% in 2020 to 8.9% in 2022, and 8.6% in 2024, continuing a downward trend from 13.5% in 2019. This prevalence among females remained relatively stable with 0.5% from 2020 and 2022, 0.4% in 2024, down from 0.8% in 2019. The total number of smokers in 2024 was approximately 256,000. In 2020, there were around 231,520 smokers, and 330,057 in 2019. Daily smoking prevalence among adults in 2017 was 5.8%, with a prevalence of 11.2% among males and 0.7% among females. Smoking-related mortality data from 2021 indicated 2,296 deaths, including 1,844 males and 452 females. The percentage of all deaths attributable to tobacco smoking was 3.65% in 2021, with gender-specific rates of 5.42% among males and 1.57% among females. These data summarise the prevalence of smoking and its associated deaths in Togo.
