The Maldives implements some regulatory measures for tobacco products including cigarettes, which allow import, sales, and purchase of cigarettes with specific restrictions. Advertising, promotion, and the purchase of cigarettes online and through vending machines are prohibited. The minimum legal age for tobacco sales is 18 years, and smoking is also restricted in public places. The prevalence of tobacco smoking among individuals aged 15 years and older in the Maldives was 28.8% in 2024, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). A detailed breakdown shows that the prevalence of smoking among adult males was significantly higher with 43.3%, compared to 3.2% among adult females. The number of current adult smokers was recorded to be 120,000 individuals in 2024.
