As of 2021, Indonesia had approximately 2.0 million current users of traditional smokeless tobacco, representing 1% of the adult population. The use prevalence of this product among females was slightly higher at 1.1%, compared to 0.9% among males. Its daily use was lower, with 0.5% among adults, including 0.5% among females and 0.4% among males. Traditional smokeless tobacco is legal in Indonesia and is regulated as a tobacco product. It is legal to sell and use these products, and online purchases are also permitted. However, packaging must include health warnings, and the minimum age for sales is 18 years. Notably, not all forms of advertising are banned in the country.
