In Ecuador, smoking is legal with certain restrictions on tobacco products. Cigarette sales are permitted. However, purchasing them from vending machines is not allowed. Buying cigarettes online and importing them for trade is legal with a license. Furthermore, health warnings on cigarette packaging are mandatory, and the minimum legal age for purchasing them is 18 years. There are also legal restrictions on smoking in public spaces, and cigarette advertising is regulated. Cigarettes are taxed at a total rate of 64.05% with a specific excise rate of 53.33%.

As of 2024, Ecuador had approximately 1.3 million current smokers, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 10%. Among adult males, the current smoking prevalence was 17.6%, and among females, it was 2.5%. In 2021, an 3,600 deaths were attributed to tobacco smoking, including 2,800 male and 808 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for approximately 2.9% of all deaths in the country—3.94% among males and 1.52% among females in this year.
