In 2017, an estimated 2.5 million adults in Algeria were current users of traditional smokeless tobacco. The overall prevalence of current use among adults was 8.9 percent. Among adult males, the prevalence was 17.3 percent, while among adult females, it was 0.4 percent. The prevalence of daily use of traditional smokeless tobacco among adults was 7.6 percent, with daily use reported at 15.5 percent among males and 0.3 percent among females.
Traditional smokeless tobacco is legally allowed in Algeria and is regulated as a tobacco product. The sale and use of the product are legal, and it is also permitted to purchase it online. However, health warnings on packaging are required, and a minimum age restriction of 18 years is enforced for all sales.
