In Bosnia and Herzegovina, smoking is legal with certain restrictions. The sale of cigarettes is legal, and purchasing them both online and from vending machines is permitted. Importing cigarettes for trade is also allowed with an import license. There is no complete ban on advertising. Health warnings on cigarette packaging are not required, and there is no minimum legal age for purchasing tobacco products. Also, there are no restrictions on smoking in public places. However, cigarettes are subject to a total taxation rate of 84%.
In 2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina had an estimated 939,000 current adult smokers, which translates to an adult current smoking prevalence of 35.3%. Among males, the current smoking prevalence was 42.2%, and among females, it was 29.1%. For reference, there were approximately 1 million daily smokers, with an adult daily smoking prevalence of 32% in 2017. Among males, daily smoking prevalence was 40.2%, and among females, it was 23.9%. In terms of mortality, data from 2021 show that smoking led to 6700 deaths, including 4900 among males and 1800 among females. This means tobacco smoking accounted for 14.42% of all deaths in the country—20.16% of male deaths and 8.16% of female deaths in 2021.
