In the Bahamas, smoking is legal but subject to regulations. Cigarettes are regulated under national law and are legally permitted for sale and use. They can be purchased online, and through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. However, there are no legal restrictions on smoking in public places. Cigarettes in the Bahamas are subject to an excise value of 42% and a total taxation rate of 54%. Despite these control measures, smoking remains a public health concern in the Bahamas. In 2024, there were approximately 42,000 current smokers among adults aged 15 years and older in the country, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 13%. This shows an increase from 10.70% in 2022. Smoking prevalence was substantially higher among males (25%) than among females (2.3%) in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to an estimated 137 deaths in the Bahamas, including 107 deaths among males and 30 among females. Overall, smoking consisted 3.57% of all deaths in the country, including 4.87% of male deaths and 1.83% of female deaths.
These rates are modelled using all national survey data published since 1990 to estimate the underlying prevalence trends by sex, then applying age-standardization to allow comparison with other countries. They do not necessarily resemble country data from 2015
