In 2021, there were approximately 552,400 current users of traditional smokeless tobacco in Burkina Faso. The overall prevalence of current use among adults was 4.8 percent, with a higher prevalence among females at 7 percent compared to 2.6 percent among males. The prevalence of daily use among adults was 4 percent, including 6.1 percent among females and 1.8 percent among males. Traditional smokeless tobacco is allowed and regulated as a tobacco product in Burkina Faso. It is legal to use and sell the product; however, online purchase of traditional smokeless tobacco is not allowed. Health warnings on packaging are required by law, and a minimum age restriction of 18 years is enforced for sales.
