As of 2024, the current prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 years and older in Burkina Faso was estimated to be 7.5%, with a significant gender disparity. The current smoking prevalence among adult males was 12.9%, while adult females had a much lower prevalence rate of 2.2%. In terms of absolute numbers, this translates to approximately 1 million smokers. In comparison, in 2020, the overall prevalence was slightly higher at 10.5%, with a prevalence of 19.1% among males and 2.1% among females. The adult daily tobacco smoking prevalence in 2017 was 9.9%, with a prevalence of 18.2% among males and 2.2% among females. The data also indicate that tobacco smoking was a substantial contributor to mortality, with 3,421 tobacco-attributable deaths recorded in 2021, accounting for 1.57% of all deaths in the country. Of these deaths, 2,520 were among males and 900 among females, highlighting the gender differences in smoking-related mortality. The percentage of all deaths attributable to tobacco smoking in 2021 was 2.09% among males and 0.92% among females. These statistics underscore the public health challenge posed by tobacco smoking in Burkina Faso and the need for continued monitoring and intervention strategies to address this issue.
