As of 2024, the total number of current smokers in Albania was estimated to be 493,000 individuals, with an adult smoking prevalence of 21.5%. Among adult females, the smoking rate was 6.6%, while among adult males, it was 37.1%. The number of daily smokers was estimated to be 592 thousand, with an adult daily smoking prevalence of 23%. Daily smoking was reported to be more common among males (41%) than females (5.6%). According to 2021 data, smoking was responsible for approximately 4700 deaths annually in Albania. Of these, 3.7 thousand were male deaths, and 1 thousand were female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 15.75% of all annual deaths, including 22.16% of male deaths and 7.78% of female deaths. Smoking in Albania is legally permitted and is regulated as a tobacco product. The use and sale of cigarettes are allowed, including online purchases. However, buying cigarettes from vending machines is prohibited. The minimum legal age for purchasing cigarettes is 18 years. Cigarette sales and imports for both personal use and commercial trade are legal, with certain restrictions. Additionally, cigarette packaging is required to display health warnings. There is a ban on all forms of cigarette advertising and smoking is subject to legal restrictions in public places. Cigarettes in Albania are taxed at a total rate of 66.67%.
