W 2016 roku odsetek dorosłych mieszkańców Sudanu w wieku 18–69 lat palących papierosy codziennie wynosił 6,9%, przy czym zaobserwowano wyraźną różnicę między płciami: 12,6% wśród mężczyzn i jedynie 0,3% wśród kobiet. W 2021 roku szacowany udział palenia tytoniu w ogólnej liczbie zgonów wyniósł 6,16%, z podziałem na 8,43% wśród mężczyzn i 2,83% wśród kobiet. W liczbach bezwzględnych przekłada się to na 15 144 zgony związane z paleniem tytoniu, w tym 12 322 wśród mężczyzn i 2 823 wśród kobiet. Dla porównania, dane z 2016 roku wskazywały na nieco wyższy procent zgonów przypisywanych paleniu tytoniu – 6,81%, w tym 8% wśród mężczyzn i 3,7% wśród kobiet, oraz łącznie 13 061 zgonów spowodowanych paleniem. Powyższe dane podkreślają pilną potrzebę wdrażania skutecznych działań zdrowia publicznego mających na celu ograniczenie tego problemu w Sudanie.
