W Brazylii sprzedaż papierosów jest legalna, a ich zakup zarówno przez Internet, jak i w automatach z papierosami jest dozwolony. Import w celach handlowych jest możliwy po uzyskaniu odpowiedniej licencji. Wszystkie wyroby tytoniowe, w tym papierosy, objęte są całkowitym zakazem reklamy. Na opakowaniach papierosów muszą znajdować się ostrzeżenia zdrowotne, a minimalny wiek uprawniający do ich zakupu to 18 lat. Palenie papierosów w miejscach publicznych podlega określonym ograniczeniom prawnym, a całkowita stawka opodatkowania tych produktów wynosi 80%. W 2022 roku szacowano, że w Brazylii było 20,8 miliona dorosłych aktualnie palących, co oznaczało rozpowszechnienie palenia na poziomie 12,3% wśród dorosłych. Wśród mężczyzn odsetek ten wynosił 15,7%, a wśród kobiet 9,1%. Według danych z 2019 roku liczba dorosłych codziennie palących papierosy wynosiła około 17,7 miliona, a odsetek codziennych palaczy wśród dorosłych – 11,4% (14,3% wśród mężczyzn i 8,8% wśród kobiet). Dane z 2021 roku wskazują, że palenie tytoniu doprowadziło do około 134 200 zgonów, w tym 89 000 wśród mężczyzn i 45 200 wśród kobiet. Oznacza to, że palenie odpowiadało za 7,47% wszystkich zgonów w kraju – 8,89% zgonów mężczyzn i 5,68% zgonów kobiet.
