Around 130–150 million people worldwide use safer nicotine products (SNP).
This group includes users of a range of non-combustible nicotine products, including nicotine vapes (e-cigarettes), nicotine pouches, heated tobacco products and smokeless tobacco products. These products are often used by adults as alternatives to combustible cigarettes, particularly in the context of smoking cessation or tobacco harm reduction.
Nicotine vaping products account for the largest share of safer nicotine product users worldwide, while heated tobacco products, nicotine pouches and smokeless tobacco products are used by smaller populations, although their availability is increasing in many countries.
The use of safer nicotine products varies considerably between countries, with generally higher uptake in high-income settings where these products are more widely available and regulated. Estimates are based on aggregated national survey data and other published sources and are updated as new evidence becomes available.
