En Senegal, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más fue del 6 % en 2022, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros. Entre los hombres, la prevalencia fue mayor, alcanzando el 11.7 %, mientras que en las mujeres fue considerablemente menor, con un 0.6 %. En comparación, la prevalencia total de tabaquismo en adultos en 2020 fue del 5.5 %, con un 11.1 % en hombres y un 0.5 % en mujeres, respectivamente. El número total de personas fumadoras en 2022 se estimó en 590,302, lo que representa un aumento respecto a las 507,888 personas registradas en 2020. Como referencia, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos en 2017 fue del 4.9 %, con un 9.7 % en hombres y un 0.3 % en mujeres. Los datos sobre mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo de 2021 indican que el consumo de tabaco causó el 2.85 % de todas las muertes en Senegal, correspondiendo al 3.92 % de las defunciones en hombres y al 1.51 % en mujeres. El número anual de muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo en 2021 fue de 3,171, de las cuales 2,429 correspondieron a hombres y 742 a mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío permanente para la salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Senegal, lo que hace necesarias intervenciones regulatorias y sanitarias continuas para mitigar sus efectos perjudiciales sobre la salud.
