En Filipinas, el consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un problema importante de salud pública. En 2022, se estimó que la prevalencia de fumadores en adultos de 15 años o más era del 20.4%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: la prevalencia en hombres fue del 36.2%, mientras que en mujeres fue del 4.3%. El número total de fumadores se reportó en aproximadamente 15.8 millones de personas. Al comparar estos datos con los de 2021, la prevalencia de tabaquismo en hombres era del 33.3% y en mujeres del 3.7%. En ese mismo año, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco entre adultos fue del 14.5%, con un 26.3% en hombres y un 2.6% en mujeres. Además, las muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo continúan siendo un asunto grave de salud pública. En 2021, se atribuyeron al consumo de tabaco 88,169 muertes, lo que representó el 10% del total de fallecimientos en el país ese año. Los datos desglosados por género muestran que las muertes relacionadas con el tabaco constituyeron el 13.34% de todas las muertes masculinas y el 5.26% de las muertes femeninas en 2021. Estas cifras resaltan la necesidad urgente de implementar intervenciones de salud pública eficaces para abordar las altas tasas de tabaquismo y sus consecuencias en la salud en Filipinas.
