Un decreto emitido por el Presidente, conforme a la Ley General para el Control del Tabaco (artículo 16) en México, prohíbe la venta, distribución, exhibición, promoción o fabricación de cualquier objeto que imite un producto de tabaco, lo que incluye los cigarrillos electrónicos con nicotina. El decreto fue originalmente establecido para abordar los cigarrillos de caramelo. No existe ninguna restricción legal para el uso de cigarrillos electrónicos. La ley que prohíbe su venta parece ser ampliamente ignorada.
