México regula los productos de tabaco, incluidos los cigarrillos, bajo un marco legal que permite su venta y consumo, pero restringe ciertas prácticas. Por ejemplo, la compra de cigarrillos en máquinas expendedoras o por internet es ilegal. Es obligatorio que los empaques incluyan advertencias sanitarias y la edad mínima legal para la venta es de 18 años. También existen restricciones para fumar en lugares públicos. México ha implementado una prohibición total de la publicidad de productos de tabaco. La tasa total de impuestos sobre estos productos es del 68%. En 2022, se estimó que había 14 millones de fumadores actuales en el país. La prevalencia de consumo actual de tabaco en adultos fue del 14.6%, incluyendo un 23.1% en hombres y un 6.9% en mujeres. En 2021, los datos de consumo diario indicaron que 6.9 millones de personas fumaban todos los días, lo que representa el 8.6% de la población adulta. En ese mismo año, la prevalencia de consumo diario fue del 13.2% en hombres y del 4.4% en mujeres. La mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo también es alta en México. Las estadísticas de 2021 muestran que 39,500 muertes se atribuyeron al consumo de tabaco; de ellas, 30,000 correspondieron a hombres y 9,600 a mujeres. En 2021, el tabaquismo representó el 3.54% de todas las muertes, con tasas de mortalidad más altas en hombres (4.64%) que en mujeres (2.04%).
