A pesar de la disminución de los impactos del consumo de tabaco en Gabón en los últimos años, las estadísticas sobre la prevalencia y las muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo siguen indicando un importante problema de salud pública. En 2021, se registraron 501 muertes atribuidas al consumo de tabaco, de las cuales 77 correspondieron a mujeres y 423 a hombres. La mortalidad debida al tabaquismo representó el 3,22% del total de fallecimientos en Gabón ese año, con un 1,16% entre mujeres y un 4,77% entre hombres. Estas cifras reflejan una ligera disminución en comparación con años recientes, ya que en 2016 se reportaron 569 muertes asociadas al consumo de tabaco. Ese año, el porcentaje de fallecimientos atribuibles al tabaquismo fue algo mayor, con un 4,56% del total, alcanzando el 5,4% entre hombres y el 2,8% entre mujeres. En cuanto a la prevalencia, en 2017 el consumo diario de tabaco entre adultos fue del 22,4% en los hombres y del 3,4% en las mujeres. Estos datos ponen de manifiesto la carga persistente del tabaquismo en Gabón, especialmente entre los hombres, y resaltan la importancia de mantener las intervenciones de salud pública para enfrentar esta problemática.
