En Argelia, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un problema importante de salud pública. En 2022, se reportó una prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos del 15.6%, con una marcada diferencia según el género: 30.2% en hombres y solo 0.6% en mujeres. En 2020, la prevalencia entre los hombres fue ligeramente mayor, con un 30.5%, mientras que en las mujeres se mantuvo constante en 0.6%. El número total de fumadores de tabaco de 15 años o más se estimó en 4,778,156 en 2022, un ligero aumento respecto a los 4,635,696 contabilizados en 2020. La prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue del 14.3%, con una diferencia significativa entre hombres (28.1%) y mujeres (0.3%). El porcentaje de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue del 8.44%, con un 11.67% en hombres y un 4.15% en mujeres. Esto se traduce en 18,214 muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo en hombres y 4,869 en mujeres, lo que representa un total de 23,083 muertes. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto los persistentes retos de salud asociados al consumo de tabaco en Argelia, lo que hace necesario continuar con los esfuerzos de salud pública para abordar este problema.
