Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más en Botsuana se estimó en 14,7% en 2022. Esta cifra representa un leve aumento respecto al 14,4% registrado en 2020, pero sigue siendo considerablemente menor que el 18,9% reportado en 2019. En cuanto a la prevalencia según el género en 2022, los hombres presentaron una tasa de tabaquismo más alta, con 26,4%, mientras que en las mujeres la tasa fue considerablemente menor, con 3,4%. Estas cifras reflejan una disminución gradual respecto a años anteriores, cuando la prevalencia entre hombres fue de 33,3% en 2019 y de 26,5% en 2020, y entre las mujeres de 4,5% en 2019 y 3,6% en 2020. Además, el número de personas fumadoras en el país se estimó en 234.642 en 2022, lo que representa un aumento en comparación con los 218.774 de 2020, pero una disminución frente a los 279.691 de 2019. La prevalencia del consumo diario de tabaco en adultos en 2017 se estimó en 9,9%, con 18,2% en hombres y 2,2% en mujeres. Los datos de mortalidad relacionada con el tabaquismo en Botsuana correspondientes a 2021 indican que el consumo de tabaco es responsable del 4,23% de todas las muertes, con 909 fallecimientos de hombres y 278 de mujeres, para un total de 1.188 defunciones. Estos datos ponen de manifiesto el desafío que sigue representando el tabaquismo en el país, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros en la prevalencia del consumo y un persistente impacto en la salud pública.
