En Austria, los cigarrillos electrónicos son legales dentro de un marco regulatorio específico. Según estas normas, la venta de productos y líquidos con nicotina para cigarrillos electrónicos está permitida y pueden adquirirse en comercios convencionales; sin embargo, no se permite la compra por internet. Es obligatorio notificar la introducción de nuevos productos, utilizar envases a prueba de niños e incluir advertencias sanitarias en el empaquetado. La edad mínima legal para comprar cigarrillos electrónicos es de 18 años. Además, existen limitaciones tanto para el contenido de nicotina como para el tamaño del depósito, y el uso de cigarrillos electrónicos está restringido por ley en determinados espacios públicos. No obstante, no hay restricciones respecto a los sabores y no se permite hacer declaraciones de salud. Tampoco se aplica un impuesto especial a estos productos. En cuanto a la prevalencia, se estimaba que Austria tenía 307,000 usuarios actuales de cigarrillos electrónicos en 2023. La prevalencia entre adultos que consumían cigarrillos electrónicos era del 4%, con un 4.5% en hombres y un 2.2% en mujeres (según datos de 2020). Se calcula que la prevalencia diaria en adultos será del 0.9% en 2025, con un 1.3% en hombres y un 0.5% en mujeres. En una encuesta realizada en 2017, el 21% de los adultos afirmó haber probado alguna vez los cigarrillos electrónicos.
