Samoa Background
Data sourced: 2024.   Page updated: 2025-10-30

In Samoa, the prevalence of adult tobacco smoking remains a significant public health issue. The adult current smoking prevalence rate among individuals aged 15 years and older was estimated to be 22.5% as of 2024. Specifically, the smoking prevalence among males was notably higher with 31.5%, compared to 13.6% among females. In comparison, the prevalence of smoking in 2020 was 31.1% among males and 12.4% among females. The estimated number of current smokers in the country was approximately 30,000 individuals in 2024. For reference, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 21.9%, with a prevalence of 12.2% among females and 31% among males.
The impact of tobacco smoking on mortality is also considerable. In 2021, smoking accounted for 15.15% of all deaths in the country including 145 males and 59 females. These data underscore the persistent challenge of smoking-related health issues in Samoa and highlight the importance of ongoing public health efforts to reduce smoking prevalence and its associated health impacts.
