In Turkey, smoking is allowed with specific regulatory measures. Based on these regulations, the sale of cigarettes are legal. However, purchasing them from vending machines or online is prohibited. Cigarette imports for trade are allowed with an import license. Other restrictions include: mandatory health warnings on packaging, and a minimum age of 18 years to purchase cigarettes. There are also legal restrictions on smoking in public places, and cigarettes advertising is banned. Cigarettes are subject to a total taxation rate of 81%.
In terms of prevalence, as of 2024, Turkey had an estimated 21.1 million current smokers, and the overall adult smoking prevalence was reported to be 30.8%. This prevalence rate among males was significantly higher (42.1%), compared to females (19.7%). Data from 2019 indicate a daily smoking prevalence of 41.3% among males,14.9% among females, and an overall adult daily smoking prevalence of 28%. These figures highlight a persistently high rate of tobacco smoking in Turkey, particularly among males, despite regulatory efforts.
