In Tunisia, cigarettes are legally allowed to be sold and used, but there are certain regulations on tobacco products, including cigarettes. These regulations ban all forms of tobacco advertising but do not set a minimum legal age for sales and do not prohibit smoking in public places such as healthcare and educational facilities. Cigarettes can be purchased through online channels but not through vending machines. Health warnings on packaging are required, and a specific excise tax of 10.98% is applied, contributing to a total taxation rate of 69% on cigarettes.
The current prevalence of smoking among adults aged 15 years and older in Tunisia was reported to be 23.4% in 2024, with a notable disparity between genders; 45.6% of adult males and 2.3% of adult females were current smokers. These data indicate a slight increase in overall smoking prevalence from 2020, which was estimated to be 20.9%. The number of smokers also increased over the years, from an estimated 1,964,464 individuals in 2019 to 2.2 million in 2024.
Smoking-related mortality remains a significant issue in Tunisia. It resulted in 10.65% of all deaths in 2021, which includes a gender-specific mortality rate of 15.28% for males and 3.86% for females. In absolute numbers, smoking-related deaths were estimated at 11,047 in 2021, with 9,421 deaths among males and 1,625 among females.
